Meet the Team – Emma Mason

With our Meet the Team series we’re hoping to give you an insight into our world here at The Business Centre (Cardiff) Ltd! We stole Emma Mason, our new Centre Manager, away for ten minutes to have a chat over some tea and one of Mel’s yummy cakes! Here’s an insight into our Centre Manager, Emma

What does it mean to be Centre Manager at The Business Centre (Cardiff) Ltd?

My role as the Centre Manager is to ensure that all aspects of the business are achieving their goals and objectives this covers Serviced Offices, Co-working space, Conference & Meeting room facilities, and Virtual offices. There is a lot of variety in the job, that’s for sure! I couldn’t do this without my fantastic team of people who manage all of the reception services such as call answering and business addresses. I also spend time working with the directors to ensure that our future business goals are achieved.

What do you like the most about your job?

I enjoy building great relationships with my clients and the feel as though you are part of a small community in the centre. I also enjoy the dynamic nature of my role including the challenges I face daily.

What do you like the least?

As Centre Manager I am also responsible to ensure that legislation and red tape is adhered too, as a result I have to complete more paperwork!

Take us through your typical busy day?

My typical day starts with arriving at the centre for around 8am to prepare paperwork and organise my diary for the day ahead. On a busy day, I usually have a meeting or two to attend in the morning, to discuss various aspects of the business. I then split my time for the rest of the day between sales, marketing and viewings of the centre. Being in a management role, each day can be completely different, however I am always guaranteed to be faced with a challenge!

Wow, busy day! Who do you work most closely with?

I mainly work with  with Lynne, our Head Receptionist, as well as Sharon and Sandra, who run the reception area. James the previous centre manager has also been very available during my transition from Operations to Centre Manager, although his main focus today is the development of the recently expanded Masons Self Storage facility.

Where did you work before and what brought you to The Business Centre?

My previous job was at Nandos Newport. I worked there as a Supervisor in the management team. I had a really enjoyable 3 years at Nandos, however the late night shifts 3 times a week and lack of routine was becoming less suited to my lifestyle as time went on. I wanted a change and more of a structural office environment job rather than shift work and so that’s what brought me to The Business Centre. My dad, Gordon Mason, approached me with a proposal to work a role which had a routine and was also closer to home. It was also an opportunity to work for the family business!

What key skill do you think that you took from your previous Supervisor role to apply to your role here?

As I had a managerial role in my previous job, I learnt the skill of how to problem solve on a regular basis. As I had to answer to all customers complaints I was always having to find solutions to every problem. I use this skill a lot at The Business Centre. I am often dealing with clients complaints/requests and always finding answers to keep our customers satisfied!

What do you do with your spare time?

In my spare time I love to keep myself fit and healthy by attending the Business Centre’s in-house gym as well as fitness classes at my local leisure centre. As many of my friends no longer live locally, I really enjoy going to visit them at the weekends in London and Swansea for a girly catch up. I also enjoy learning new things by watching documentaries on BBC iPlayer – they are super interesting!

Did you get involved in the Movember charity fundraising?

I did! I participated in the MOVE for Movember Challenge where we had to cycle 500 miles on a static bike located in reception. I personally cycled 40 miles throughout the month and I raised £50 towards our £500 target!
