When you first meet the new member of our flexible workspace team, Operations Assistant, Karen Shaw, one thing is immediately clear, she brings warmth, humour, and a down-to-earth energy that fits right in at The Business Centre.
As Operations Assistant, she thrives in the variety that each day brings.
One moment she’s invoicing, answering queries, and keeping on top of admin; the next, she’s preparing vacant offices, setting up meeting rooms, or stepping in to resolve client issues. It’s a fast-paced, ever-changing role, and exactly what she enjoys most.
“The people and the whole atmosphere here really make it a great place to work,” she says.

Karen’s career has taken her through insurance, administration, and healthcare, giving her a wealth of experience and a strong foundation in organisation, communication, and people skills.
But it’s not just her professional background that stands out. At the heart of everything she does is a simple approach: treat others how you’d like to be treated, always with a big smile.
A Natural Fit for our Flexible Workspace Team
Karen was immediately drawn to the opportunity at The Business Centre. The role offered the kind of variety and people-focused environment she was looking for.
From her very first day as part of our flexible workspace team, Karen felt at ease. The friendly, welcoming atmosphere and genuine family feel instantly made her feel at home.
Finding Joy in the Everyday
What stands out most about Karen is her outlook.
For her, success is simple. “I only want to achieve happiness and a good sense of achievement in what I do daily,” she says (although she does joke that Emma’s office would be nice).
She adds: “You can be happy in your job if you work in the right environment and with the right people for you.”
It’s this grounded, positive mindset, combined with the trust and responsibility she’s been given, that has made her settle into the role so naturally.
Tea, Teamwork, and Taking It All in Her Stride
Karen starts her day the way many of us would approve of, with a hot cup of tea, a chat with Karen at reception (yes, we have two Karens now!), and a gentle ease into whatever the day brings.
When things get busy? Her approach is straightforward: just keep going.
Life in Barry with Wayne, Gary, and a Bit of Spiced Rum
A lifelong Barry local, Karen lives with her partner Wayne and their adorable cat Gary. Outside of work, she makes the most of her downtime. Whether it’s caravan weekends, fishing trips, theatre visits, socialising, travelling, comedy shows, live concerts, or walks along the beach, she keeps life varied, much like her role at The Business Centre.
And after all that? A spiced rum and Diet Coke to round things off nicely.
