Here at The Business Centre, we have a newbie in our reception team: Sandra Rowell, so we thought this would be a great time to introduce Sandra and focus this month’s Meet the Team on her!
Sandra started with us back in August and joined our friendly reception team, working in The Business Centre in the afternoons with Lynne (who you can find out more about here). We popped down to Mel’s for a cup of coffee and a chat with Sandra.
We detect a nice Scottish accent, so what’s a Scottish Lass doing down South? Where are you from originally? What brought you to Wales. What do you like about living in Wales, what don’t you like? What do you miss about Scotland?
Originally, I’m from a small seaside town in North Ayrshire called Saltcoats. I’ve been living in Wales with my husband since 2006, after he was promoted within the RAF and posted to St Athan. I really like living in Barry, it’s quite similar to Saltcoats. Plus, I really like having the beach and the countryside in easy reach. Although, I do miss Scotland a lot, my three sisters and their families are still in Scotland, but I visit when I can.
Tell us a little about your job? Who do you work with, what does your job involve?
What does a standard day look like for you? From waking up to coming to work and then going home.
Most mornings I like to go for a fast walk for about an hour, before having a shower and taking my 11-year-old chocolate lab out for a walk. He’s quite old now, so our walks are more ‘plods’ than the faster walks like when he was younger, then I go home for lunch and to get ready for work. After work, I go home quickly before picking up my daughter from work, we’ll have tea and then go out for another walk with my dog for half hour or so.
What brought you to The Business Centre? How long have you been with us?
I was looking for a change after two years of working as a vet receptionist, something with slightly shorter days and that left my weekends free. So when I saw the the vacancy, I decided to apply and now I’ve been working here since August.
What job were you doing before?
I was working as a receptionist/administrator for a vets.
What’s the main difference between your previous job and this one?
My last job was mostly face to face with the public, whilst having the added bonus of having lots of furbies to cuddle!
What’s your favourite thing about working at The Business Centre?
I like that the people such a diverse bunch but they are all nice and friendly! I really enjoy the freedom of only working in the afternoon, plus it’s a great bonus getting to meet so many people and having a chat and a laugh! It’s really nice to work for a family business where you really feel part of the team rather than just for another corporation.
How do you unwind and relax outside of work?
I really like going out for long walks, I enjoy walking alone but also with my husband and the dog.
If you weren’t at The Business Centre what would your dream job be?
I would love to live on a little small holding and open some rescue Kennels!
For anyone thinking about becoming a receptionist, how would you describe your job?
It can be really interesting and busy, and you get to meet a wide range of people.
We’re really pleased that we were able to steal Sandra away for five minutes and get to know her a little better, we think she’s already part The Business Centre family!
