Capturing fleeting, heartfelt moments

Katrina founded Shutter Hire in 2010, setting up her studio in Dinas Powys, Cardiff. Specialising in family and newborn baby portraits, she has an impeccable talent for capturing those fleeting, heartfelt moments that mark the special journey of growing a family. She has also diversified her skillset, offering commercial image services, including product photography and headshots

Moments last forever

Outside the studio, Katrina weaves beautiful, timeless moments as a wedding videographer and photographer, ensuring that cherished memories last a lifetime. Additionally, she expertly showcases the essence of live events and takes commercial projects to new heights with drone and aerial work.

Artistry with heart & soul

Welcoming families and business owners alike, Katrina pours her heart and soul into her artistry. Respected and loved in The Vale of Glamorgan, she has forged strong relationships with many local small businesses and families, who trust her year after year to make precious moments last forever.

“It has been an absolute pleasure to share in the exciting journeys of so many families. I consider it a tremendous honour when I am chosen to capture significant milestones, from the joy of welcoming new babies to the celebration of marriage,” expressed Katrina.

Wedding Photographer of the Year

Running a one-woman business successfully isn’t easy, and it’s even more challenging as a mum. However, Katrina takes it in her stride, and her hard work has been acknowledged and celebrated over the past few years.

“I am so thankful to be recognised for the quality of my images, and it’s a great privilege to be honoured with many prestigious awards.”

It’s been a busy year on the awards scene for the photographer, having been a finalist in the Vale Business Awards and the winner in the category of Wedding Photographer of the Year at the Prestige Awards.

A legacy lives on

Katrina’s love for photography started at a very young age. Her father had a passion for it, and he would create film photographs in his makeshift darkroom.

“My dad sparked my fascination. Growing up, we had photo and video cameras in the house, and I was always asking to use them.”

During school, Katrina gravitated towards creative subjects, such as drama and media studies, eventually pursuing videography during her tertiary years at Derby University.

Successful self-employed mum

Eight years ago, Katrina welcomed her first child as a single mother. This was a very turbulent time for her, as she had to juggle being self-employed and a new mum.

“I am so proud of how far I have come. It’s been a turbulent journey but I never gave up on my dreams, I have overcome obstacles and developed a strong brand. My attitude has always been positive, to keep going and strive to be the best version of myself.”

Supportive stay-at-home dad

Katrina and her husband welcomed a second child in March 2022. However, with her demanding career, she returned to work just 3 weeks later.

“My partner has taken on the role of stay-at-home dad to support my career growth. It’s a challenging responsibility, but one he thoroughly enjoys.

“It’s difficult being a parent of young children while self-employed, but it’s the path I’ve chosen. Working seven days a week is not uncommon, and weekends are usually occupied with events, leaving little time for my family. Though it can be tough, my job is more than just work – it’s a hobby and an unwavering passion.”

Thriving amid fierce competition

The biggest challenge for Katrina is navigating her profession in an immensely competitive market. She emphasises that achieving success demands significant investment in training, skill development, advertising, and equipment acquisition. Additionally, Katrina stresses that the industry is in a constant state of evolution, requiring her to stay updated with new technologies, techniques, and styles.

“Photography and videography have changed so much over the years, with equipment advancements and new editing styles improving the field. To remain current and exciting, it’s essential for occasional retraining and to follow industry leaders in their approach.”

Embracing the journey

With over 10 years of experience, Katrina’s advice for aspiring photographers is to be prepared for a slow start but to persevere.

“As an artist, it will take time to establish your own style and client base. The key is to believe in yourself, network, and invest in training. Enjoy the ride and rest assured that you will reach your goals and achieve success.”
